food 4 kids: booby trap egg sandwich September 9, 2007

Big kids, too. Mmm – today I made an egg sandwich and decided to put a child-at-heart twist on breakfast. I hollowed out a poppy seed roll, and hid within it a fried egg on a bed of sharp cheddar cheese. Next, I placed arugula and spinach leaves on top for unsuspecting passers-by, and propped up the bun lid with toothpicks. Finally, I constructed a woodland/jungle scene of veggies (baby artichoke, blue lake beans, The Tomatoes, red onion, pickled daikon radish, bok choy, mushroom caps) and potatoes as the backdrop, on a lagoon of seasoned dried seaweed. At one point I was thinking of crafting a creature that set up this elaborate trap, but I then realized two things: that creature is me, and I’ve got to eat sometime!

That was a great idea that turned out well! The trap almost looks like a muppet head.

  2. insomnisnack Says:

Thanks! I hadn’t seen the muppet head until you mentioned it, but that is definitely appropriate in the spirit of imagination + food!

this is so gorgeous. the lagoon is the most limpid emerald green. the liberal use of vegetables looks like a perfect crunchy fresh accompaniment to the sandwich. I won’t go into my dreams of strolling in that colorful woodland since it seems I am always trying to inhabit the landscape/abodes of your meal.

such imagination you have and an artist’s eye!

  4. insomnisnack Says:

Thank you!! Why won’t you join me in strolling the woodland? I am resting for a moment on the mushroom gills. The wind makes them ripple like a back massager.

The photo is beautiful, as usual, very vibrant colors. You are so lucky to be living in California where such amazing vegetables are so available.

Now for the older sister dose of reality. When I saw the final picture I thought, Boy does she go all out! When does she find time to eat her creations???

I’m sorry, I’m always crashing the party. But I’m sure you knew I was thinking it!

  6. insomnisnack Says:

Niece – where would I be without your “older sister dose of reality”? Shudder, the thought!

So you don’t worry, this meal only took about 20 minutes to make. The landscaping was courtesy of Golden Produce (and mother nature), the egg was speedy, and the bun toasted up quick under the broiler. For the potatoes, I boiled them till fork tender, mashed them in a bowl and crisped them with a butter/olive oil combo in the pan. Easy as pie!

  7. denisem718 Says:

I’m relieved! I think I might even try to make this delicious creation, although mine may be minus the landscaping. But it will definitely include the potatoes. Mmm, they remind me of Christine’s potatoes.

  8. insomnisnack Says:

That’s the spirit!! Yours will be wonderful. Yes, they do taste similar to Christine’s potatoes. I added salt, pepper, and thyme (it’s what I had in the fridge), but rosemary would be better.

  9. denisem718 Says:

Well I made my version this morning. I didn’t have any potatoes, but I had a wonderful loaf of ciabatta bread. I cut a thick slice and cut a whole in the middle of the slice with a round biscuit cutter. Then I buttered both sides of the slice and the round. I put it into a hot, nonstick skillet and let them get a little brown. Then I dropped one egg into the center. I topped it with grated gruyere cheese. When it was done, I served it with fresh basil and a side of the sweetest watermelon I have had this summer. Yummy! But now I need a nap!

  10. insomnisnack Says:

Ciabatta is Linds’ nickname 🙂 because she can make herself long and flat like the loaf.

That sounds so tasty! I like how you used a thick slice of bread rather than a roll. I love gruyere, and am wishing I had a slice of ripe summer watermelon right about now!

    Enjoy your nap!!

  11. curlykale Says:

I like the sound of Niece’s version. I also love gruyere. I have been wanting to try the cut out hole in a piece of bread with egg inside for a long time. That would be a perfect 1:00am snack right about now.

  12. insomnisnack Says:

Maybe she’ll make it for you…? Come along for an ATL visit soon – We love 1am snacks and the kitties are super cute, if not a bit naughty!

  13. insomnisnack Says:

Special note: This did require little time to actually make, but I enjoyed prior planning, dreaming, and “living” in this foodfun. I dreamt about it all night and woke up with my layout! But even if it took 3hrs to make instead of 20 min, that would just be three additional peace-of-mind hours for me.

  14. denisem718 Says:

Now I will always think of Lindsey when I eat Ciabatta bread, which may be in a few minutes. I have always loved this sandwich. I completely agree with curlykale that this is the perfect late night snack. The gruyere gives it a nutty flavor, the ciabatta ensures the carb induced slumber and you get a little protein, what more do you need?

Come to Atlanta where we have perfected the art of late night snacking, make that “At Home” late night snacking.
